The Lake District National Park is a beautiful, inspiring location for any artist, but late October through to early November sees this area bursting with finest, richest colours that nature can provide (although each autumn is unique so vibrant colour is NOT guaranteed especially if some storms have blown through). Add to that dramatic mountains, mirror still lakes, bubbling streams, and fantastic woodland and you have the perfect mix of subjects to get the creative juices fired up.

The workshop at a glance
Exertion: Moderate slopes and sometimes extended length, rough and uneven paths. The National Park is not flat and there will be some slopes to negotiate no matter which locations we end up at. Also some locations are a distance from the car parks. Lastly, some lake shores will have wet rocks and some woodland paths/steps will be slippery which will need care, attention and balance to negotiate safely. Excluded: Lunch and evening meal charges - Personal & equipment insurance - Any additional refreshments - Camera equipment - Suitable clothing & footwear. Included: Four nights bed & breakfast accommodation at the Tarn Hows Guesthouse in Keswick - travel & parking charges around the Lake District for the duration of the workshop - 1-2-1 tuition and guidance - Advise on all aspects of photography - Guidance through each of the locations - The chance to work & learn at your pace - Encouragement to embrace subjects that interest you! - Lots of patience - We have three days and all locations will be embraced at your pace. |
What to expect
For the 2025 workshop we will again be taking in locations in and around the Borrowdale Valley. For this reason the workshop will be based in the vibrant town of Keswick. On Wednesday morning we will all meet up in the breakfast room in the Tarn Hows Guesthouse, and after an introduction and briefing, we will then spend the first part of the day exploring the potential of a nearby location.
Popular locations for the workshop include Ashness Bridge, Surprise View, Ashness Woods, Grange Crags, Derwent Water, High & Low Brandlehow piers, Manesty Woods, Blea Tarn, Crummock Water, Rydal Water, Castlerigg Stone Circle, and the Mill near Seatoller. I have it on good authority (via a chance meeting with Thomas Heaton some years ago) that the Borrowdale valley is the best area in the Lake District National Park for autumn colour. All the example images below were created in the area at this time of year.
I have been visiting the area regularly for the last 20 years or so with a photographic mindset, and therefore know the area very well.
* The dates have been timed in order to avoid the UK schools autumn half term, and the weekend. This will make getting around the area and parking much easier.
** There MAY BE opportunities on the second and third mornings for sunrise outings, usually around the Keswick area. Full details will be given during the workshop and may be dependant on parking availability at the days locations.
The workshop is restricted to six people to keep a small and friendly group, and give you all plenty of time with me on each day.
Please carefully note:
A non-refundable deposit of £400 is required to secure your place. The balance is due 28 days before the start of the workshop.
Upon payment, you will be sent a booking form which must be completed in full and returned to me within 21 days. Failure to complete this form may result in me cancelling your booking.
If the workshop is cancelled by me (for example, due to illness or other circumstances beyond my control), all monies paid to me, including the deposit, will be refunded. No further liability can be accepted.
If you cancel your booking up to 6th September 2025, AND I am able to re-sell your place, then I will refund your deposit in full.
Cancellations AFTER 6th September 2025, regardless of reason, will result in the deposit being retained.
The participant is responsible for their own travel to the Lake District, lunch & evening meal costs, and personal and equipment insurance costs.
